Algodones Dunes

Recognize these dunes?

They were featured in the first episode of Star Wars. These are the Algodones Dunes, facing southeast, in Imperial County of California. The dunes extend a long way—about 60 miles, I think, yet they're only about three miles wide. The actual location where Star Wars was filmed was about 15 miles southeast of where I took this picture.

Highway 78,

the Ben Hulse Highway, is a black ribbon stretching across the middle of this picture. I took this picture facing northwest. I think it's amazing that an asphalt road could be built over the dunes!
